A Study on the Intensity of Vowels of Disyllabic Words in Sundanese

چکیده

In this study, the effects of syllable position, syllable type and vowels on the intensity of disyllabic words in Sundanese are analyzed. It is shown from the result that, in Sundanese, for disyllabic words, the first syllable tends to be stressed, so the intensity values of vowels in the first syllable are larger than that in the second syllable. As the CVC syllable is phonologically heavier than the CV syllable, the intensity of CVC syllable is higher than that of the CV syllable. The intensity value of low vowel, /a/, is larger than that of high vowel /i/ and /u/, which is due to the fact that low vowels have a higher intrinsic intensity than high vowels.

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. Lexical and Nonlexical Print-to-Sound Translation of Disyllabic Words and Nonwords

Almost all of the theoretical and empirical work on reading aloud has considered only the reading of monosyllables, and so the special problems which arise when one is attempting to give an account of how polysyllabic words and nonwords are read aloud have been thoroughly neglected. Here we begin to remedy this neglect with an exploratory study of this issue from the viewpoint of the dual-route...

Quantity contrast in Inari Saami: the role of pitch and intensity

The paper investigates the variation of pitch and intensity as a feature of the quantity contrast in Inari Saami. Previous studies [1, 2] have shown that in the context of short vowels, an intervocalic consonant has three degrees of length, while after a long vowel the distinction is binary, and that there is also a compensatory lengthening mechanism between the segments within the foot. The re...

The influence of accentuation and polysyllabicity on compensatory shortening in German

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between compensatory shortening and coarticulation in German tense and lax vowels in trochees and iambs and to determine whether this relationship was influenced by prosodic accentuation. Speakers produced near minimal pairs differing in vowel tensity in monosyllabic and disyllabic words (both trochees and iambs) in accented and deaccent...
